In 1994 Verve were forced to change their name to 'The Verve' in face
of legal action. The American jazz label Verve Records had previously
started a lawsuit to prevent the group continuing to use the name
lest music buyers become confused.
On the 31st of May The Verve issued a limited edition compilation
of B-sides and out-takes titled 'No Come Down'. The record was released
for the US market to celebrate their scheduled appearance at that
year's Lollapalooza Festival.
During the 5-week road show Peter was arrested in Kansas City after
trashing his hotel room. Later the same day Richard collapsed from
dehydratation after leaving the stage at the 'Kansas City Sandstone
Amphytheatre'.
Richard:
"Sometimes if you're on the road for a long time, just playing
those ballparks like on Lollapalooza, then you just go mad. If you
could get us a room full of instruments, a PA and a bit of draw, we'd
be in there jamming... Instead you wake up in a car park outside some
superbowl stadium 25 miles from anywhere, where there's nothing to
do but drink. It would get to anyone, that. I was in bits by the end."
The Verve came back to England and retreated to the Loco Studios in
South Wales with producer Owen Morris to record their 2nd album.
Richard
:
"Four intense, mad months. In great ways and terrible ways. In
ways that only good music and bad drugs and mixed emotions can make.
The first weeks were elation, then we just went through the emotions.
We used to drive around at night waiting for the feeling to come.
Other times, we'd sit around, doin' absolutely nothing. Gettin' stoned.
Owen became one of us, he thinks that we're the best band in the world."
Nick:
"It's turning out something of a soul record, but when we went
in the studio we had no preconceived notion of what it was going to
sound like. The first 3 weeeks were the best 3 weeks of my life, because
we were just enjoying making music and not thinking about it. And
then it all went nuts. Richard and Owen were shouting and smashing
things and I was retreating into myself. At the end it was horrible."
